Volleyball Goes 3-1 on Weekend as Play Concludes at the Wildcat Invitational

NEWARK, Del. – The Jefferson (Philadelphia University + Thomas Jefferson University) volleyball team (4-5, 0-0 CACC) closed out a 3-1 weekend at the Wildcat Invitational, hosted by Wilmington University in Newark, Del. from the WU Athletics Complex, on Saturday afternoon. Senior Corinne Justus was named to the eight-person All-Tournament Team at the eight-team event.

MATCH THREE OF FOUR – AMERICAN INT'L – L, 25-20, 25-20, 25-20
Freshman Caitlin Crespo finished with a match-high 16 digs in the loss to the Yellow Jackets while junior Courtney Wensel tied for a match-high 16 digs. The junior also hit .343 in the loss for the Rams, tops on the squad.

The Yellow Jackets scored the first four points of the opening set. Though the Rams got within three after trailing by as many as seven, Jefferson could not mount the first-set comeback.

Jefferson took an early 2-0 lead in the second, a lead they held until American Int'l tied it up at 14-all. The Yellow Jackets took the team on the next point, holding on for the second-set victory.

The third set featured five lead changes before finding itself tied up at 8-8. The Yellow Jackets would score the next four points to go up 12-8 before the Rams charged back to tie it up 12-12. The two squads were tied at 13-13, 14-14, 15-15 and 16-16. American Int'l then took a 20-17 advantage, winning 25-20 for the third-straight set as the Rams fell in the opening match on Saturday.

MATCH FOUR OF FOUR – MERRIMACK – W, 25-13, 25-22, 25-15
The Rams swept the Warriors for the second time on the young season after facing the Warriors in the opening weekend of play at the Long Island Invitational.

Wensel led the Rams with 13 kills in the win, the lone Ram in double figures for kills. Crespo finished with a team-high 14 digs followed by sophomore Mariah Cadzow with 10. Freshman Logan Dontell had five block assists while Justus hit a team-high .500 behind seven kills on 14 total attacks. As a team, the Rams hit .314 in the win.

A six-point stretch in the middle of the first set helped Jefferson stretch a 11-7 lead to 16-7. The Rams had an 11-point edge at 20-9, 21-10 and 23-12 before winning 25-13.

The second set was the closest between the Rams and Warriors. After the opening point, the Rams regained the lead at 7-6. Later, a four-point stretch for the Warriors gave them a 11-9 advantage. Jefferson tied up the set at 13-13 before taking the lead for good at 18-17.

Jefferson grabbed the first six points of the third and final set of the Wildcat Invitational. The Warriors went on a similar six-point run towards the middle of the set but could only get within one of the Rams. Jefferson never trailed in the set as they closed out the match, 25-13, 25-22, 25-15.

The Rams now host Wilmington in their CACC opener and home opener on Wednesday, Sept. 13. Action from the Gallagher Center is set for 6 p.m.
