NEW CASTLE, Del. – The Jefferson (Philadelphia University + Thomas Jefferson University) softball team (10-16, 5-7 CACC) dropped a pair of CACC games at Wilmington (Del.) (19-9, 7-2 CACC) on Tuesday. The Wildcats won the opener, 3-2 in eight innings and had a 16-0 victory in five innings in the second contest.
GAME ONE – L, 3-2 (8 inn.)
The game was a pitcher's duel as each team mustered just four hits. The Rams got on the board in the third when freshman Winnai Hoyt doubled in senior Erin Maher. Jefferson went ahead 2-0 in the fifth on senior Stephanie Pepper's lead-off home run to left field.
Wilmington pushed across its first run in the bottom of the fifth via an RBI double. With one out in the bottom of the seventh, the Wildcats tied the game with a homer to left.
In the eighth, the Rams were retired in order. Wilmington drew a lead-off walk in the bottom half and a pair of errors on the next play allowed the winning run to score.
Pepper was tagged with the tough-luck loss in the circle. She pitched a complete game and allowed three runs, two earned, on four hits with 11 strikeouts and just one walk.
GAME TWO – L, 16-0 (5 inn.)
Wildcats' pitcher Makayla McCarthy baffled the Rams' hitters, tossing five no-hit innings with nine strikeouts. She hit a batter and walked one in the third. Wilmington tallied two runs in the first, five in the second, three in the third and six in the fourth to end the contest early with the eight-run rule.
