Joa Hits Two Homers but Baseball Can Only Split with Wilmington (Del.)

PHILADELPHIA – The Jefferson (Philadelphia University + Thomas Jefferson University) baseball team (16-27, 14-14 CACC) won the opener, 5-2 but dropped the nightcap, 8-7 in 13 innings to visiting Wilmington (Del.) (29-16, 17-11 CACC) on Wednesday.

GAME ONE – W, 5-2 (9 inn.)
The Wildcats struck first with a pair of runs in the second on back-to-back RBI singles. Junior Austin Torres blasted a lead-off homer in the bottom half to make the score 2-1.

Junior Richard Joa smacked a two-run homer to right field in the third to put the Rams ahead, 3-2. Joa and senior Christopher Lorenzo scored on an error in the fifth to give Jefferson some insurance.

The Rams received solid pitching from sophomores Daniel Sabath and Matt Bukavich. Sabath earned the win after going 5.1 innings and allowing just two runs, one earned, on seven hits with one walk and four strikeouts. Bukavich tossed the last 3.2 frames for his first save. He conceded just one hit while striking out one.

Jefferson got on the board in the opening inning with a sacrifice fly by sophomore Arturo Figueroa. Lorenzo made it 2-0 in the second with an RBI single. Wilmington evened the score in the third on a single and a sac fly.

In the fifth, Joa picked up his second two-run homer of the day, sending a towering shot over the center field fence for a 4-2 Rams lead. The Wildcats went ahead in the sixth with a three-run inside-the-park home run. Jefferson plated the equalizer in the bottom half on an error. Neither team was able to score in the seventh, sending the contest to extra innings.

Wilmington pushed a pair of runs across in the top of the eighth on a single and a double. However, the Rams came back to tie it in the bottom half. Sophomore Efrain Santiago doubled with one out and was brought home by sophomore Cole Kriger's base hit. After a strikeout, the Wildcats got a ground ball and thought they had the victory but a throwing error kept Jefferson alive. Joa made Wilmington pay, recording an infield, game-tying single on the next at-bat.

Both teams had chances to score over the next few frames but could not gain an edge. The Wildcats finally broke through in the 13th, sending an RBI single through the left side to take an 8-7 lead. The Rams were retired in order in the bottom half.

The Rams are in the fourth and final playoff spot in the South Division with four games remaining. They have a one-game lead over USciences and a two-game advantage over Goldey-Beacom. Felician and Chestnut Hill have secured a berth in the conference tourney while Wilmington needs just one more win or one USciences loss to lock up its spot.
