PHILADELPHIA – The Jefferson (Philadelphia University + Thomas Jefferson University) baseball team (13-24, 11-11 CACC) battled back to earn a doubleheader split with host Chestnut Hill (18-18, 13-9 CACC) on Friday. The Griffins won the opener, 10-7 before the Rams pitched a 2-0 shutout in the nightcap.
GAME ONE – L, 10-7 (9 inn.)
Jefferson took an early 1-0 lead on sophomore Arturo Figueroa's RBI single in the first. Chestnut Hill responded with a three-run first on a sacrifice fly, an RBI groundout and a run-scoring double. The Griffins broke the game open with four runs in the fourth. They profited from a two-run single, a sac fly and a wild pitch.
The Rams cut the deficit to three in the fifth. Senior Andres Valbuena drove in a run with a double before scoring on an error and Figueroa knocked in another run with a base hit. CHC made it 9-4 in the bottom half.
Each team recorded a run in the seventh. Jefferson pushed a run across in the eighth on a fielder's choice and got within three in the ninth on a groundout before the Griffins finished off the win.
Junior Jack Galligan was sensational on the mound, hurling a complete game shutout and allowing just two hits. He walked one and struck out five. Galligan sat down the first six Griffins he faced before an error gave Chestnut Hill its first baserunner to start the third. With two runners on after a one-out walk, Galligan retired the next two batters to end the frame. The Griffins got their first hit with an infield single in the fourth. Galligan allowed just one baserunner in the final three innings en route to the two-hitter.
The Rams head to Bloomfield for a twin bill on Saturday, April 13 at 1 p.m.
