PHILADELPHIA – The Jefferson (Philadelphia University + Thomas Jefferson University) baseball team (7-15, 5-3 CACC) split a CACC doubleheader at USciences (8-13, 4-4 CACC) on Tuesday. The Devils won the opener, 6-5 and the Rams came back to take the nightcap, 8-5.
GAME ONE – L, 6-5 (9 inn.)
Each team pushed a run across in the first. Junior Robert Wood reached on an error and later scored on a single by junior Austin Torres. USciences countered with an RBI single in the bottom half. The Devils tallied two runs in the fourth to take a 3-1 lead then made it 4-1 in the fifth.
Sophomore Chase Fike led off the seventh with a base hit and came home on sophomore Efrain Santiago's double to right center to cut the deficit to two. However, USciences posted two runs in the bottom of the frame and the score was 6-2.
Jefferson rallied for three runs in the eighth on RBI singles by senior Timothy Brodhag and Torres and a sacrifice fly by senior Ryan Gonzalez. However, that was as close as the Rams would get as they were retired in order in the ninth.
GAME TWO – W, 8-5 (7 inn.)
USciences got on the board first with a pair of runs in the second. Jefferson took the lead with a four-run third. Torres doubled in two runs before Gonzalez also knocked in two with a double to left center. The Rams increased their advantage to 6-2 in the fourth when Wood hit an RBI single and Brodhag followed with a triple.
The Devils closed the gap to one with one run in the fourth and two in the fifth. Jefferson added a couple of insurance runs in the seventh as senior Andres Valbuena drove in two with a base hit to left. Senior Andrew Dark allowed just one baserunner in the bottom half to pick up his first save.
