NUTTER FORT, W.VA. – The Jefferson (Philadelphia University + Thomas Jefferson University) baseball team (2-12) lost its final game of the weekend at Salem (W.Va.) (13-11), 9-4 on Sunday.
The Tigers got on the board first with an RBI single in the opening frame. They tacked on two more runs in the second via a fielder's choice and a groundout. Salem made it 4-0 in the fifth on a base hit.
The Rams struggled to get going offensively, recording just two baserunners in the first five innings. Jefferson broke through in the sixth as sophomore Arturo Figueroa doubled to left center and came home on a single by senior Timothy Brodhag. The Tigers launched a three-run homer in the bottom of the sixth to make it 7-1.
In the seventh, Salem scored its final runs on a double and a single. Senior Matt McGee sent a two-run blast over the fence in left to cut the deficit to 9-3 in the eighth. Brodhag recorded a sacrifice fly in the ninth for the last tally.
The Rams open conference play on Wednesday, March 20 when they host Goldey-Beacom for a doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m.
