Women's Basketball Escapes Kutztown
 
KUTZTOWN, PA – Thomas Jefferson University women's basketball (4-0) was down 48-47 with 41 second left, but two fouls that made the Rams go 3-4 at the free throw line and a last second block helped Jefferson leave Keystone Arena with a 50-48 victory over Kutztown University (2-2) in Saturday evening competition.
 
WHAT HAPPENED
  • The Rams went 14-7 over the Golden Bears in the first quarter. Jefferson held Kutztown to only 16.67% shooting in the first 10 minutes. The Rams scored 12 of the first 14 points in the game with Emily Spratt contributing six of those. Carolyn Sipprell had two free throws in that span with a layup after the run to have four points. Tori Nigro and Gabby Recinto had a basket each
  • Kutztown went to score 18 points in the second half to Jefferson's 11, tying the game at 25-25 at the break. Spratt had a layup basket while Kaci Mikulski hit a jumper to make it 18-10.  The Golden Bears took the lead off a 11-1 run
  • Spratt had a free throw during that run and eventually even the game at 21-21 with a layup. After Kutztown regained the lead, Jade Marquez hit two layups to get Jefferson ahead. Two free throws for the Golden Bears tied it at 25-25 as both teams head to the locker rooms
  • The Rams started the third quarter strong as Sipprell and Spratt combined for 11 points to take the lead and make it 36-29 with 2:03 to go in the quarter. Caleigh Sperling hit a basket and helped Jefferson maintain their 38-34 lead heading into the final quarter
  • The fourth quarter had Sipprell hit a three and Nigro make a jump shot as it was a nine-point Jefferson lead with 8:18 to go. Kutztown began to rally back going on a 14-4 run to go ahead of the Rams 48-47. Recinto and Ana Pellecchia had a basket during that run to keep Jefferson in the game
  • Trailing with 40 seconds left, the Golden Bears fouled Jefferson twice that forced Nigro and Spratt to have a combine 3-4 at the free throw line. Kutztown had one more chance to tie the game, but a Recinto block finished the contest at 50-48 in favor of the Rams
