freshman guard Jim Connolly(Harleysville, PA/
Souderton) caught fire from three-point range and led the
Philadelphia University Rams (21-6, 13-1 CACC) to a 58-52 win over
the University of the Sciences Devils (6-14, 4-7 CACC) on Tuesday
night at Bobby Morgan Arena. Connolly led the Rams with 13
points, three boards and three assists.
The win puts PhilaU Head Coach Herb Magee at
901 wins, just one shy of tying hoops legend Bobby Knight in NCAA
all-time wins.
The Rams held the edge from field goal range (42%-38%), but
PhilaU shot just 50% from the free-throw stripe to USP's 79%.
USP got a jump on the Rams, leading by as many as 14 in the
first half, led by Adewale Adefemi, who finished the night with 11
points.
PhilaU got within nine at the half, trailing 31-22.
The maroon and gray's Mike Yocum (Dresher, PA/
Episcopal Academy) dumped in a bucket to set up a senior guard
Marcus Lemon (Alexandria, VA/ T.C. Williams) trey
to tie it at 35's halfway through the second stanza. Yocum
had 10 points and nine boards while Lemon dropped in 11 points and
five assists for the Rams.
The Devils got a big trey from Curtis Fitch at 3:48 to go up
48-45 but another Lemon three-ball tied it up at 48-48 with two
minutes to go. PhilaU's Connolly followed with another three to go
up 51-50 just one minute later. Fitch led the Devils with 15
points and three boards on the night.
Connolly went 4-4 at the charity stripe in the final seconds to
hold on for the 58-52 win. PhilaU's senior guard
Russell Frederick (Baltimore, MD/ Calvert Hall)
added 12 points and three assists in the victory.
The Rams return to action on the road at Post University on
Saturday (2/20) at 3 p.m.
