Frederick Leads Rams Past University of the Sciences in CACC Quarterfinal Action

Box Score

Sophomore point guard Russell Frederick registered a game-high 20 points and dished out five assists, leading the Philadelphia University men's basketball team to a 65-44 win over the University of the Sciences in the quarterfinals of the 2008 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Tournament.  The win improves the Rams to 20-11 overall as they advance to the tournament semifinals and will host Bloomfield College on Wednesday, March 5th at 7:00 p.m.

Sophomore forward Malcolm Ingram added 14 points and seven boards for Philadelphia University, which has won a season-high eight straight games.  Sophomore guard Marcus Lemon added 11 points and seven rebounds off the bench for the Rams, which also got ten points and nine rebounds from sophomore center Mike Yocum.  The Devils, who end the season with a 13-15 overall record, were led by senior forward Keith Dundas with 15 points.

Head Coach Herb Magee's squad, which earned the top overall seed for the tournament by virtue of its perfect 16-0 conference record, jumped out to a quick lead in the contest, holding a 19-5 lead with just over 11 minutes remaining in the first half.  The lead then swelled to 18 points at 27-9 when Lemon converted on a layup with 5:14 left in the opening frame.  However, the Devils stormed back, going on a 15-0 run to trim the lead to 27-24 before Frederick connected on one of his four three-point field goals to snap the Rams' drought.  Fueling the University of the Sciences' run was Dundas, who scored six points during the stretch, and junior forward Shane Connor, who added five points as the Rams led by just six at the half, 30-24.

In the second half, Philadelphia University took control quickly, scoring the first 16 points to take a 46-24 advantage, capped by an Ingram layup with 14:56 remaining in the game.  The Devils tried to make one more run, but would get no closer than 19 points as the Rams posted 20 victories for the season for the 28th time in Magee's illustrious career including five consecutive campaigns.
